Malcesine - Val di Sogno

Lake Garda is recognised by experts as being among one of the best areas in Europe to offer reliable wind conditions. 50 kilometres long, and with a stretch of approximately 20 km in the northern part that is surrounded by mountains, as opposed to a flat southern part, it offers a diversity of wind conditions. The northern part is windy and chillier, whereas the broader southern part sees completely calm conditions in high summer. This is essential to know when planning your holiday!
Even the twenty kilometres from Torbole in the north to Garda, where the lake widens, will offer completely different wind systems and strengths, depending on the time of day and weather conditions.
In general it can be said that, in high pressure conditions, the “Vento” starts to blow: this is the mountain wind from the north that gathers strength on its way to the south and reaches its peak at Malcesine. It does not, however, not reach the lake’s bays, which is also true of the “Val di Sogno”, that is situated in the hill’s lee like a quiet natural port. The early morning hours from 6 am are reserved for the surfers, kiters and Hobie cracks.

Our service boat will therefore take surfing guests from the bay with its quiet wind conditions directly to the best starting place in the wind–Olivo, an offshore island. At the same time, surfers and sailors as well as kids can do their beginner’s training on Optis and surfboards, taking advantage of perfect conditions in the secure bay.
Once the sun starts warming the mountainsides in the north, the “Vento” dies away, and after a short break, Southern Thermic winds, the “ORA” starts. Again, this wind can only be found in the narrow northern part of the lake. It starts in Torri del Benaco as a mild breeze. On its way north it intensifies, reaching a wind strength of 5-6 in Torbole, due to the channelling effects of the narrowing valley.
The Val di Sogno Bay then offers ideal intermediate winds of three to four Beaufort for sailors, Cat sailors and surfers with some experience.

With the new ultra broad boards by Starboard and sails up the 10 square metres surfers will be able to glide across the bay. With only a stretch of three kilometres cracks will be able to reach the western area of the lake at Campione, where the Ora increases by a wind strength at the cliffs that drop steeply away to the lake. Even surfers with short boards will be able to find gliding conditions here, and Hobie sailors can practice in the advanced class.
in a nutshell:
For beginners, Val di Sogno is the best spot at Lake Garda as it offers far more hours of ideal wind conditions than other places.
Val di Sogno is also the ideal area of the lake for sailors with dinghies, Hobie Cats and kite surfers, with a range of winds to cater for all of them.
It’s only the real fun board surfers that will find better winds at Torbole. For everyone else, the dream bay "Val di Sogno" is the perfect choice!
