Lake Garda is located in northern Italy on the edge of the Alps. The largest part is framed on both shores by mountains up to 2000m high. Only the wide southern part lies in the lowlands. Because of this location in the Alps the lake is a thermal area. While in the southern part there is mostly calm or only moderate wind, the north from Torbole to Garda is dominated by regular thermal winds. Every sailor and surfer knows ORA and VENTO. When there is high pressure, you can rely on both winds! Early in the morning the Vento blows from the cool valleys in the north to the south. After a short lull at noon, the ORA starts to blow more and more from Torri del Benaco. On the way to the north end of the lake, it is accelerated by the narrowing mountains on the shores and reaches up to wind force 5-6 Beaufort in Torbole.
But also at Lake Garda there are low pressure areas, clouds and rain. Then the air pressure conditions and the direction of the fronts and weather systems are decisive for wind strength and direction. This makes it more difficult to estimate wind strengths and the appropriate wind window.
Satellite images provide clues. Rain and lightning radar are reliable tools to be back on land in time before the thunderstorm.
Wind forecasts of the many weather apps are, however, for the most part not usable. They are based on data that are relevant in larger areas in the flat country, but reach their limits at mountain lakes.
On this page you will find links to weather portals and wind apps.
Our wind forecast for the current day is based on a mixture of weather data and the experience of 45 years on Lake Garda. We publish this assessment daily at 8.20 on our website and on the page of the largest Lake Garda portal Gardasee.de.
We wish all our water sports guests good wind and lots of fun on the water! Below are links to Weather-Online , Windy, lightningmaps.org. and Webcamp.
Please keep in mind that especially the WIND DATA are regional and not local for the small area of North Garda. The termic winds and local winds are not considered.
